Somewhere between the silent protests on the football field and the violence in Ferguson, Baltimore and Dallas, many people who care about the issues of racism and mass incarceration are voicing their opinions.  Since Michelle Alexander wrote her book, The New Jim Crow, over 4 years ago, conversations about mass incarceration have taken place on a national level.

The third event in the “Still Speaking” Lecture Series will add to the dialogue with this program. The presenters are two New Jersey residents, State Senator Raymond Lesniak and Frank Bolden.  Both are very knowledgeable about the issues of racism and mass incarceration.

Senator Raymond Lesniak (D-20th)
has been an advocate for social justice during his thirty plus years in State government.  He sponsored the repeal of the death penalty in 2007 (replacing it with life without parole) and just this year sponsored a bill (S51) to restrict the use of solitary confinement in state prisons.  He has also worked for “reform of the criminal justice system, to put the focus on treatment, rather than incarceration, for criminal offenders dealing with drug and alcohol addictions.”

Frank Bolden, Esq. is Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the United Church of Christ.  He is the principal author of the “Dismantling the New Jim Crow Resolution” adopted by General Synod 30 of the United Church of Christ in July of 2015.  Before retiring, Mr. Bolden had a thirty-year career with Johnson & Johnson and has served on the boards of organizations across the country, chairing several of them.  According to Bolden, “With the presidential campaign currently absorbing all the media space, it is imperative that we all take time to learn about an important subject that threatens the stability that is essential to the wellbeing of our society.”

The lecture series is an ongoing partnership between Union Congregational Church and First Congregational Church and is open to everyone.
